Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee met today with Chadian Transitional Military Council (CMT) President Mahamat Deby in N’Djamena.  Assistant Secretary Phee and CMT President Deby discussed the importance of a peaceful, timely transition to a democratically elected and civilian-led government by the end of 2022.  They affirmed the importance of an inclusive national dialogue in May as the best path to long-term stability and prosperity in Chad, followed by a constitutional referendum and free and fair elections.  CMT President Deby committed to hold the national dialogue without exclusion, recognizing the Chadian people’s desire for a successful transition.  The Assistant Secretary expressed support for an 18-month transition as well as for the African Union’s May 2021 call for CMT members to abstain from taking part in national elections.  Assistant Secretary Phee and CMT President Deby discussed Chadian efforts to counter terrorists and address security threats along its borders.  The two expressed their support for the Ukrainian people and the principles enshrined in the United Nations and African Union Charters, currently under threat by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
