The Chadian Alumni Association (AVITE/USA) seized the opportunity of World Press Freedom Day to hold a discussion on “The Role and Responsibility of the Press during the Election Process” at the Embassy.  Deputy Chief of Mission Eric Whitaker mentioned the importance of the day, paid tribute to killed or imprisoned journalists, and cited the various contributions of the Embassy to the press in Chad. His remarks were followed by those of the Association’s chairwoman who stated that freedom of the press is a major component of democracy. Twenty-three journalists and some staff members of the High Council of Communication took part in the discussion moderated by two alumni and a journalist. The panelists gave presentations then opened the floor to questions, answers and comments from the participants.
