FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Embassy of the United States of America in Chad is glad to hear the Chadian authorities, including President Deby, affirm their commitment to holding legislative elections this year.
Those elections, which were due in 2015, can strengthen political and social stability; to do that, it is essential that the whole electoral process be credible. In that regard, it is worth recalling the conviction of the people and government of the United States of America: freedom of association is a fundamental pillar of democracy. The authorities have the responsibility to facilitate participation at all stages of the process; that includes, among other things:
- authorizing without delay political parties that meet the legally established criteria;
- fully respecting the right of citizens to assemble peacefully, even when the purpose of the gathering is to criticize the regime and to urge citizens to vote against the ruling party.
