The United States Embassy applauds the broad participation of the Chadian people in the April 10 presidential elections. You have shown a commendable determination to participate in the democratic process by registering to vote and going to the polls in historic numbers. We congratulate you for the effort you have made to choose your national leadership.
Reports of irregularities in the electoral process, including reports of ballot stuffing and that some military voters were denied the right to secrecy of the ballot and intimidated, marred an otherwise peaceful vote. We continue to assess these and other reported issues. The United States Embassy calls upon the Chadian Government to address these deficiencies to bring greater credibility to future electoral processes.
We also urge all to respect the full electoral process, including any appeals to the Constitutional Council of the provisional results. We urge the Constitutional Council to give full consideration to any appeals filed, and to do so in a transparent and inclusive manner and in accordance with Chadian law.
We are inspired by the active and vigorous participation of the broad range of Chadian political parties, who demonstrated a strong commitment to democracy. The continued peaceful involvement of the Chadian people and political parties in the political process is vital to the future development of the Republic of Chad. We continue to urge the Chadian Government to allow the people to exercise their constitutional rights of freedom of expression, movement, and association.
