The United States applauds the broad participation of the Chadian people in the April 10 presidential elections. You have shown a commendable determination to participate in the democratic process by registering to vote and going to the polls in historic numbers. We congratulate you for the effort you have made to choose your national leadership.
The U.S. Embassy received reports of generally minor problems obtaining Voter Registration Cards, delays in the opening of polling stations, lack of materials in some polling stations, and isolated incidents of violence. The United States is concerned by the continued detention of civil society figures and others and calls for the release of those detained for attempting to exercise constitutional rights. Because reliable communications are necessary for a nation’s political, social and economic development, we hope that all communications technologies are quickly restored.
